Tripura State Rifles
In view of growing insurgency in Tripura during 1980s, Tripura State Rifles was raised on the pattern of Central Para Military Force (CPMF). Subsequently, Tripura Legislative Assembly passed Tripura State Rifles Act. 1983. Based on that Act, the 1st Bn TSR came into existence on 12th March, 1984. This was followed by raising of other TSR Battalions. Presently, there are 12(twelve) Battalions of TSR in the State, out of which 9 Battalions are India Reserve (IR) Battalions.
Key Functions of tsr:-
Counter insurgency operations in the State.
Assisting the civil Police in maintaining Law & Order.
Assisting the civil administration in relief and rescue work especially during natural calamities.
Providing security in trouble prone areas by establishing protective Camps.
Security of VIPs/ vital installations etc.
Performance of escort duties etc.
Protection of life and property in the event of any disturbances.
Security duties to ONGC & OTPC.
Railway protection duty in the interior locations.
TSR Battalions are maintaining considerable number of camps in the interior parts of the State and performing CI OPs, ROPs, Protection/Security, special Ops duties etc.
One TSR Battalion is deployed for dedicated security duties of ONGC in the State of Tripura. Moreover, security duties are also being provided to GAIL in addition. One TSR Battalion has also been deployed in Delhi to assist Delhi Police for performing Law & Order duties.
For disaster response, there are 04 Companies of SDRF comprising of TSR personnel that are trained and equipped to handle major disaster situations in the State.
The role of Tripura State Rifles has been widely appreciated in combating and controlling insurgency in Tripura without human rights violations. The professionalism and high standards of the force has been appreciated and recognised at the National level. The Rifles is known for high operational adaptability and terrain mapping. It has significant contribution in conduct of elections in sensitive areas across the Country.
Tripura State Rifles IR Battalions have been extensively utilized for deployment outside the State of Tripura for covering security of the Common Wealth Games, 2010 held in New Delhi, in connection with Parliamentary & Assembly elections in Jharkhand, West Bengal, Bihar, Nagaland, Manipur, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Mizoram etc.
Establishment of TSR Training Centres:-
To maintain the high professional standards of the force, there are two dedicated training centres for the Tripura State Rifles:
A.Ch. Rama Rao, TSR Training Centre, R.K. Nagar, West Tripura:-
The TSR Training Centre was set up in the year 2000 to impart progressive professional in-service training to the TSR personnel. Further the said Training Centres has been renamed as A CH RAMA RAI TSR TRAINING CENTRE in the year of 2009 in the memory of beloved late A.Ch. Rama Rao, IPS ADGP, Tripura vide DGP Tripura L/No 24489-529/BV(100)-PHQ/2006 dated 22-06-2009. The Centre imparts training in Basic Courses, Cadre Courses, Driving & Maintenance Courses, field craft and tactics etc. Till September -2022, a total of 17624 trainees from different TSR units have undergone training at this Centre.
Counter Insurgency & Anti Terrorist (CIAT) School, Kachucherra, Ambassa, Dhalai Tripura.
The School came in existence in the year 2012 with the assistance from the BPR&D, MHA, Govt. of India. The School imparts training in CI Ops and jungle warfare tactics not only to TSR personnel but also to CPMFs like CRPF, RPF and RPSF etc. As on 26-09-2022, a total of 6275 trainees from different organizations have undergone training at this School.
As the Tripura State Rifles leaves its mark while discharging duties outside Tripura with other police forces and establishments, the force continues to evolve in professionalism. The force lives by the ethos of Seva, Veerta and Bandhuta as the three pillars of public service on which the Tripura Police stands.
