Government Railway Police (GRP)
History:- The Government Railway Police is one of the specialized units of Tripura Police. This was created to fulfill the definite objective of ensuring the safe and hassle free journey to the general public by train. It is mandated to put all the necessary efforts to prevent the crime, detect the crime, maintain the law and order and ensuring safety and security of passenger in its jurisdiction. GRP is also mandated to investigate the crimes occurring in the railway tracks within Tripura.
The establishment of GRP is conceptualized since 2006 when the railway line was extended up to Kumarghat and the people started using railways as one of their preferred mode of transport to accomplish their long distance journeys. In furtherance of this, GRP in Tripura was established by the Government of Tripura through the notification.
DUTIES OF GRP:
1. Control the vehicular and passenger traffic in the station premises
2. Maintaining the law and order at station premises.
3. Prevention of overcrowding in trains.
4. Perform surveillance in loaded passenger trains.
5. Arrest those found committing nuisances and those suffering from infectious diseases.
6. Keeping the station free from idlers and beggars with the help of railway authorities
7. Examination of all empty carriages on arrival at terminal stations.
8. Removal of bodies of persons dying in trains or on station premises etc and conveyance of sick passengers with the help of railway authorities.
9. Liaise with the railway authorities and RPF / RPSF for preventing the crime in its jurisdiction.
10. Prevention of occurrence of crime and investigation of the crimes committed in the GRP jurisdiction.
11. Arrest offenders who had committed cognizable cases and forward them to the Magistrate.
12. Prosecution of cog. and non – cog cases under Indian Railways Act.
13. Keep sharp watch on the illicit traffic of excisable articles and movement of suspicious characters.
14. Liaise with the district police in prevention and detection of crime in GRP jurisdiction.
RULES AND REGULATIONS:
The Government Railway Police is governed by the rules and regulation as laid down by the provisions of the Police Regulation of Bengal.

MODERNISATION:
As a part of modernization scheme, Government Railway Police has been included in the CCTNS project.
WELFARE MEASURES ADOPTED BY THE UNITS
Government Railway Police is planning to implement sports and recreational activities in GRPS campus. The liaison with nearest hospitals and registered medical practitioners is under way so that the GRP men and the victims of crimes in train may get treatment on urgent basis. GRP men are motivated to take part in blood donation camp during as and when need found.
ACHIEVEMENTS:
Since the inception of GRP, the dedicated GRP men are ensuring the prevention of crime, better maintenance of law & order, better regulation of traffic in Railway Station premises etc and finally the safety and security of passengers and property within the jurisdiction of GRP.
